28 Degrees Taurus is an odd bird. Taking the style of Blonde Redhead or Sonic Youth, with wide, chiming guitars, the trio sets the genre on its head with Karina Dacosta's vocal stylings. Instead of singing out properly, Dacosta chirps in an ambient register, adding more of a sound to their dreamlike production than a voice. "Electricity2" is a prime example, where Dacosta uses an effective reverb on her voice, making it climb above Jinsen Liu's classic-indie guitar and Greg Murphy's tumbling drums. "Universal Love" is a sexy number that leaves you wanting for more, and "Heart Attack" does a lot with a little, as expansive guitar chords are sent out as soundwaves like the reflection of the moon in a slow-moving creek, only to speed up as it reaches its conclusion. This is their first EP after two full albums, and perhaps a hint of the third full length to come. If "Seeking Heat" is any sample, it looks like we're bound for songs of hushed whispers and chugging guitars ... which is fine by us.

The Middle East is a great venue when it's kind of full--but it can be a mess when it's completely sold out.

Surfer Blood & Turbo Fruits

By ioncrash on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 5:26 pm None-too-shockingly, Jonas Stein of Turbo Fruits (formerly of Be YourOwn Pet) turns out to be a pretty chill guy. After all, the dude’s written more songs about weed than I care to list right now.
