Those Soul Clap boys are most known for their loose '80s nights and ability to hold down any crowd, from techno snobs to a Patriots barbecue in the light rain. It's no surprise then that these re-edits have made their way into some pretty significant hands. This is what it sounds like when the two worlds of Soul Clap collide—the shuffling, forward-thinking technoid half meets the R&B half on the A-side. "Conscious" takes a line from Womack & Womack's 1988 title track "Conscience" and turns it over on a loping, cool, minimal beat. It's already opened sets of big DJs at the Winter Music Conference. The funkier side wins on "Love Light," which again mines the '80s with a line from The Woman in Red soundtrack, Stevie Wonder's "Love Light in Flight" (the Stevie groan is unmistakable, as is the classic line "fuel injection passion"). These are simple edits for sure, but, like so many great edits, no one can turn it up like Eli and Charlie. Pressed up at only 400 copies in a black-label, underground style, I expect many a followup in the future. Like, right now. Hop to it, gents!
