MOTOR

By David Day

Bryan Black is one half of Motor, an electronic duo that plays wickedly maximal acid music. We spoke with him via telephone in his New York City apartment.

YOU'RE SIGNED TO NOVAMUTE/EMI IN EUROPE, HOWS THAT GOING?

EMI has decided to drop all their boutique labels, so they're really screwing over Mute. They're forced into looking after Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp and Moby now.

MOBY'S NOT VERY WELL-LIKED UP HERE.

He's kind of like that all around the world. He has that effect on people, doesn't he?

LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM. HOW ARE YOU GUYS RESPONDING TO THE "ELECTRO" TREND?

We're even more extreme. Our next single is on Kompakt and it's like a 10-minute "E" track. It's the total opposite to the crunch-crunch wallop that everyone is doing at the moment. The distorted mash-up sound is on its way out. You can't listen to it all night. It's no good on the brain.

IF MOTOR WAS A CAR, WHAT CAR WOULD YOU BE?

It would have to be an American V-8 car from the '60s or '70s, but I've always been a fan of the 911 Carrera from the early '80s.

ANY MACHINES OF FICTION THAT INSPIRED YOU?

I was really inspired by the original Alien. Even watching it now, the whole visual aesthetic is still inspiring and fresh. We like the idea of machines that make mistakes.

CRAZY STORIES FROM THE ROAD?

We were playing our first gig with Nitzer Ebb in Frankfurt and we had all these topless, fat, bald, German skinheads launching themselves at us. We were fearful of our lives.

THAT SOUNDS TERRIFYING.

Although, our stuff is pretty relentless. If we upset people, it comes with the territory.

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

By Naoko Yoshida on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 12:53 am

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
