Tiësto

Tiësto. Just the name itself inspires thoughts of trancey beats, laser lights, E pills and Europeans with a shitton of hair gel. But who's the man behind the name eponymous with such glories? That would be Tijs Verwest, a name that inspires considerably less. The Dig caught up with the three-time "No. 1 DJ in the World" (DJ Magazine) via phone from LA, where he was in a decidedly "Tijs" mood. No worries, though when the lights drop at Estate, Tiësto will be there. Glowing.

TIËSSSTO!

Hello. How are you?

I HAVE TO ASK YOU ABOUT THE SUPPOSED WORLD RECORD YOU HAVE ... 31 CANS OF RED BULL IN 24 HOURS.

That is not true. I don't know how that rumor got started, but no, I never drank that much Red Bull. That's from Wikipedia or something.

ARE YOU SUGGESTING WIKIPEDIA MAY REPRINT FALSE INFORMATION REGARDING CELEBRITY DRINK PREFERENCES?

I don't know. I think that's just a story that got spread on the internet.

WHAT'S ANOTHER MISCONCEPTION THAT PEOPLE OFTEN HAVE ABOUT TRANCE DJS?

That it doesn't take any work. A lot of people would say it's less arty than somebody who can play the guitar or something. A DJ has to have a lot of skills to get to the top. He needs to be brave.

WHAT'S MORE IMPORTANT: WINNING AWARDS OR SEEING PEOPLE GO APESHIT WITH A PAIR OF GLOW STICKS AT YOUR SHOW?

The awards don't mean that much to me. It's always nice to be recognized for your work but it's more important that people come to my show and they like my music.

HOW FAR WILL HOLLAND GO IN THE EURO 2008 SOCCER TOURNAMENT?

I don't have high expectations. Maybe the semi-finals. If they can get past their group with France and Italy, I think they have a chance.

GO ORANJE!

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
