MRS. DANVERS

By HILARY HUGHES

Mrs. Danvers sticks out in Boston for a couple of reasons: First, they're a female rock band from Berklee, which has a predominantly male student population. Second, all the girls are queer and third, their name is a creepy lesbian character from a Hitchcock film. They have a penchant for the poppier side, and we spoke to Steph over coffee at the 1369 Coffee House.

SOMEBODY THREW UNDERPANTS AT YOU?

It's true! At Dyke March last year, two of our friends threw their shirts at us onstage, but when we were cleaning up, we found a random pair of underwear! We were in the middle of a song and all of a sudden a pair of panties flew up. At the time, we didn't want to touch them, so we kept the panties in a baggie.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU'VE FACED IN BOSTON AS AN ALL-GIRL ROCKPOP BAND?

People kind of doubt us at first because we're all girls, which isn't cool. "Oh, a girl? About to play drums? And bass?!" We have to prove ourselves. Sometimes it works to our advantage ... we hear a lot of: "You guys are actually pretty good!"

WHICH SONG WAS THE HARDEST TO WRITE?

Definitely "Nicole." Nicole was this girl that one of us had a crush on who disregarded someone's feelings. Lyrically, "Can't Help It" is pretty heavy and emotional ... that one hits all of us pretty hard.

DO YOU PLAY ANY OTHER INSTRUMENTS BESIDES THE ONES YOU ROCK ONSTAGE?

Dhy knows how to play a synth bass now, which is really cool, and Randi can play the flugelhorn and didgeridoo in addition to the trumpet.

DOES BEING A BAND HELP YOU PICK UP CHICKS?

No. Well ... maybe.

I just fled the dining room at the hotel because I ruined Texas-shaped waffles for everyone.  I got four hours of sleep last night, and Jess and I just shuffled off for free breakfast like zombies.

Like a cool kid, I slept through my alarm back in Boston yesterday morning, scrambled to finish packing before my last minute cab showed up, and then forked over $40 for said cab to drag my sleepy ass to Logan for my flight to SXSW.
