BORN OF FIRE

By DAVE WEDGE

Spray-tanned, fist-pumping Bostonians have a multitude of options to get their hip-hop/club banger fix. But headbangers hooked on Marduk, Slayer or 3 Inches of Blood are limited to the dive bar jukebox or your Dunkin' Donuts-cup-strewn shithole. Metal aficionado Zack Wells is changing that with his new DJ night, "Born of Fire," featuring brutally fantastic metal, live bands and horror flicks on the TV.

WHY A HEAVY-METAL DJ NIGHT?

I've been going to The Pill and other nights around town for a long time. I was driving around town one night and was in the mood to go drinking and listen to metal but didn't want to go to the Model.

WHAT CAN ONE EXPECT TO HEAR?

Just playing old and new stuff that runs the gamut—Cannibal Corpse to Kyuss, Megadeth, Unearth, Venom, Darkthrone. Death metal, thrash, hardcore—bands like Terror, Trap Them, old-school '90s hardcore. Real metal. No cock rock or hair metal. There's nothing wrong with that stuff, but we just won't be playing it.

WHY DOES BOSTON NEED A METAL NIGHT?

There are a lot of people who like metal, and there's nowhere to go. It's a night people can hang out with friends, drink, watch a movie and hear music they like.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF SOMEONE REQUESTS DRAKE OR MARIAH CAREY?

I'll just pretend not to hear them. What I really want someone to do is make a sign with a bloody pentagram on it and put that in the window so people will know exactly what's going on.

WHAT IS YOUR HOPE FOR THE NIGHT?

There are a lot of closet metal people in town. But you don't have to have long hair and a beard to hang out.

Copeland/ I Can Make A Mess at Middle East 3/6/10

The Middle East is a great venue when it's kind of full--but it can be a mess when it's completely sold out.

Surfer Blood & Turbo Fruits

By ioncrash on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 5:26 pm None-too-shockingly, Jonas Stein of Turbo Fruits (formerly of Be YourOwn Pet) turns out to be a pretty chill guy. After all, the dude’s written more songs about weed than I care to list right now.
