THE MUMMY (UNIVERSAL LEGACY SERIES)

VINTAGE AMERICAN HORROR

By DAVID DAY

DVD_TheMummyUniversal

On November 29, 1920, the tomb of King Tut was opened and the world collectively shit (clay) bricks. The resultant obsession with Egyptian culture and mummification may have culminated in this 1932 ultra-classic filled with racism, sex and references to necrophilia. Inspiring more spin-offs than a kegstand, The Mummy is a great example of how progressive we were before World War II and how the '50s put us back a decade. "Haven't I had enough for one day," says leading lady Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann), "without the thrill of making love to a complete stranger?" Yowza! The story itself is very compelling, with Boris Karloff turning in another dynamite horror role (he's most famous for being the monster in Frankenstein) and some pretty cool special effects. The documentaries are droll as hell (we fell asleep), although the monster-movie retrospective narrated by Kenneth Branagh is awlright. It's still worth renting over the latest CGI circus with Brendan Fraser.

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
