STEVE PORTER

By DAVID DAY

When it comes to superstar dance-music producers in Boston, we're talking a one-hand-only type thing. One of those digits, however, belongs to Steve Porter, whose brand of "Porterhouse" has made him a jet-setting globetrotter who rarely finds the time to get back to his launching pad here in Massachusetts.

"He's always rocking his Red Sox hat and playing tunes written by his buddies from Boston," says local producer and DJ Mike Swells, who is one of those buddies. "His three-mix compilations and artist albums are also littered with locally produced tracks and remixes from the likes of Chris Micali, Island 9 and yours truly."

Friday sees Porter at the after-hours club Rise, where he is still an official resident, which simply means he plays there with regularity. After that, the rest of his summer will be spent in places like Zurich, Switzerland; Cairo, Egypt; and, of course, a stop in the most celebrated island in the dance music world, the Balearic Islands' own Ibiza. Ho hum. "His gig itinerary doesn't leave a lot of time for hometown nights," Swells, who also works at Boston's much-loved dance venue, says plainly.

"In the late '90's, he was just some kid from western Mass.," says Swells. "And now he's the most significant Boston-based dance music export since Armand van Helden."

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
