When talent takes a risk, it sticks the landing. Juana Molina, an Argentine songwriter known for psychedelic balladry, has done just that on her fifth album, the far-out Un Dia. Taking inspiration from Tropicalia, or more recently, the strangely popular Konono sound, this is a compendium of soft chants, rhythmic circles and strange vocalizations that will catch many of her fans off guard. Songs here last as long as they need to, running on musical entropy, and rarely are there any perceptible words. Like Konono, Molina seems to be making music from a junkpile, but this junkpile is a mess of circuits, wires and machines. "Los Hongos De Marosa" is the most alien, a series of looping melodies and synthetic detritus that change in a bogglingly natural way. It could be suggested that Molina took some serious acid to come up with this, but I don't think she needs it.
