From a solid debut last year, Rescue Aurora return, bringing on the production talents of Bryan Russell (Straylight Run and The Academy Is ...). The result is a notable step forward for this still-young band. Where their first recording was somewhat tentative and shallow, the new sound is fuller, more insistent. Lead vocalist Brittany Flynn is much better—whether belting the high-note chorus of "Chances" or crooning through the title track, there is a pervading confidence in Things that wasn't felt as acutely on the first EP. Their instrumentation has improved, as well: Guitars jangle, reverberate and roar; the drums are tight and the bass is solid. Russell's production has been a boon, but the songwriting is also better: Dual guitar lines appear everywhere, weaving through a haze of distortion, and vocal harmonies are more intricate. Demonstrating such acute musical growth, there's no reason the improvement can't continue with the long player to come.

The Middle East is a great venue when it's kind of full--but it can be a mess when it's completely sold out.

Surfer Blood & Turbo Fruits

By ioncrash on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 5:26 pm None-too-shockingly, Jonas Stein of Turbo Fruits (formerly of Be YourOwn Pet) turns out to be a pretty chill guy. After all, the dude’s written more songs about weed than I care to list right now.
