MOTHERBOAR

By DAVID DAY

In Metal-land, there're basically two types of acts: bands that focus on the rock so hard and with such ferocity, they might as well be in the armed forces, and bands that just get wickedly fucked up and throw themselves into the mosh pit of life. Motherboar is most definitely the latter.

Frontman Kenny Irwin basically ends the night somewhere between spitting whiskey at the crowd or face-up in the pit. Or both. This Friday night, the four-piece reunites with their doppelgänger from Omaha: Bloodcow. They spent eight days last fall touring with the Nebraskan crazies.

"We, as you know, like to partake in some adult beverages," says Irwin. "So we tested them every night ... and they passed." The tour was also under the watchful, penetrating stare of Imperial Battlesnake. "That tour was so much fun, being with that many of the same sweaty rockin' dudes every day and night for a week and a half. Everyone should really try and do that at least once in their life," says Irwin. "Even if it means shitting out on your whackass cube job and losing mad money ... Who cares about that shit anyway."

"Their frontman, 'Merger', runs a gore movie club out of his living room," says Motherboar guitarist Andrew Doherty. "Their guitar player has a tattoo of a Nintendo controller on his arm and the other guitarist, who goes by the name ''87,' has a beard that smells like roadkill."

What else was memorable about the jaunt?

"How about brawling with teenagers on the streets of Trenton, N.J. over a cigarette?" says guitarist Brian Connor. "Or when we stumbled into a gay cruising spot in the middle of the night at a rest stop in Connecticut?"

Motherboar isn't all rockin' and spitting. Their forthcoming split 7-inch with Bloodcow has some fiercely innovative ideas as well. Each package, designed by Redemption Tattoo's Josh McAlear, comes with a CD of the music with bonus tracks. "Let's face it," says Irwin. "Nobody is buying music anymore. Everyone gets shit for free through the wonderful interweb world ... which we are cool with."

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
