LUMEN ECLIPSE

VIDEO BRILLIANCE

By RAPHAEL LUCKOM

The official list of Things Which Will Always Be Cool runs as follows: television, music, the future. Lumen Eclipse, the force behind the video display at the kiosk in Harvard Square, incorporates all three. First, it's called Lumen Eclipse. How future is that? And they didn't just forget how to spell "lunar" either; I checked. A "lumen" is a measure of the perceived power of light. See? Clever. Every month they load a fresh set of music videos and video art pieces into their twin-pronged video display in the square, where people see them on the way to one of the 12,000 ATMs. This has been going on since late 2005, and featured artists have included Michel Gondry (of The Science of Sleep fame), Miranda July (of Me, You, And Everyone We Know fame) and Yoko Ono. The reason it's important now is that Lumen Eclipse is having a party at Middlesex Lounge to preview July's videos. The party is called Le Peek, the video compilation is called Typography. For one, Lesley Barnes' enchanting "Herzog & the Monsters" is reminiscent of Where the Wild Things Are and other strange childhood fantasies. Other artists/videos include Kristina Yee ("Alice") and Roel Wouters ("ABC"). And because dollars are not the way of the future, you don't need any to get in.

[Le Peek. Fri 6.27.08. 7pm-9pm/21+/free. Middlesex Lounge, 315 Mass. Ave., Central Sq., Cambridge. 617.868.6739. The kiosk in Harvard Sq. is active from dusk until 2am. lumeneclipse.com]

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
