Pities the fool that doesn't like the Atlantean myth

By Christine Denning

Cheese wrapper? Culinary wrestler? Grocery store chalkboard artist? That could only be one person: comic book artist Paul Maybury. The native Bostonian has recently spent a large chunk of his time preparing for the release of his new graphic novel Aqua Leung, the tale of a boy who sets out to regain the throne of Atlantis. Working with writer Mark Andrew Smith (and red-hot publishing house Image Comics) Maybury helped create a dark story full of action along with a balance of humor to even things out. "I think, story-wise, we're trying to use something very common to quickly establish the world that the story takes place in."

Inspired by Aquaman and Namor, Maybury took the myth of Atlantis and "gave it some teeth." By freeing the story of complicated backgrounds, the plot can be more creative in the future. "In the next two volumes we're completely free from those trappings of 'fantasy' stories, and we can go off in any direction we please with established characters." Aside from drawing, Maybury still has fun. He's even unintentionally insulted people by drawing Mr. T selling steaks on a grocery store chalkboard. "I guess vegans and vegetarians complained because they felt Mr. T pitied them because they wouldn't eat meat."

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
