As obnoxious as most of the Red Sox preseason updates are, I have to admit, I am eating the whole thing up. Official spring training games don't start until February 25th and even then it's a long haul until opening day on April 6th, but I am still being barraged with "news".
Aside from being plagued by Dan Shaughnessy's asinine column when reading the Globe, many Boston news outlets love giving (often useless) Red Sox updates to dopes like me who read them. Everything you ever wanted to know from the state of Tim Wakefield's health (don't worry, he "feels good") to the daily weather in Fort Meyers is covered.
You can even flip through the inane slide show of the crews loading the truck outside of Fenway Park on "
Truck Day" and gawk at the players' equipment as they get ready to transport it to spring training.
Today's Sox news includes (in case you missed it):
Kevin Youkilis arrived to Fort Meyers four days early.
Brad Penny, a new guy, is excited about the season.
And Clay Buchholz is preparing to be mentally tougher this year.
It's not that I don't recognize these stories as essentially meaningless. Even while reading about such trivial details as Clay Buchholz changing his mental strategy and wondering why this requires a full 500-word news story, I can't stop reading. I am completely submerged in the hype that surrounds Red Sox Nation. In the midst of the cold winter I am gearing up for the spring and summer days when I can drink beer with my friends and watch the great American pastime from the comfort of my living room. Maybe I'll even trade in my Jason Varitek shirt for a more relevant player's jersey (sorry Tek).
So even as I roll my eyes each day at the useless Sox updates, with each headline I get a little bit closer to my favorite time of year.
