Normally I wouldn't waste time bitching about the Metro, the fact that they have little/no original content, and that they are apparently copyedited by a drunk chimpanzee, but a story in Thursday's edition pissed me off enough to the degree I feel the need to publicly shame them.
The story was about a lawsuit being pursued by someone associated with the planning and perpetration of the Mumbai massacre that accuses a female FBI agent of using sex as a torture tactic when interrogating the prisoner. The story was accompanied by a stock photo of a woman in a dominatrix get up with a caption reading something like "This may be the new FBI uniform". So, ha-ha-ha, we all have a good laugh, it involves sex; all very amusing...Until you take a step back and realize that the story is about an accusation of TORTURE! It may seem like a novel and innane notion stateside, but for someone of the Islamic faith, which the detainee is, being forced to engage in sexual activity outside of his marriage is in direct violation of his deeply held religious beliefs. Would it be as amusing if a Jewish person were tortured by being forced to eat bacon or a devout Christian to engage in homosexual activity? I think not.
Furthermore, once you get past the whole torture thing, you have to take inot account that this story in no small way makes light of the investigation into the events at Mumbai, which constitute one of the most disturbing incidents in recent memory. Um, think it might be too soon, you trite, emotionless douchebags? Never mind the fact that the story is written in a humorous way with lines like "and she allegedly interrogated him all night long", but to further confuse things and undermine their own story, someone at the Metro office thought it would be a good idea to drop in an accompanying info box reminding the reader that 173 PEOPLE DIED IN MUMBAI!! Kind of a mood killer, no?
Either this was a poorly written serious news story that the Metro decided to run and make worse with off-color, offensive humor graphic support or the story was written as a joke which is a reflection on the poor taste of the writer, and the Metro decided to run it anyways, thus endorsing the authors insensitivity. Either way, The Metro, you should be ashamed of yourself.
But then again, what else is new?
