Today's News

By MELISSAJELTSEN on Mon, Feb 11, 2008 3:32 pm

You can gauge how good a newspaper is if you read it on Monday because usually not much happens over the weekend so papers rely heavily on prewritten articles that aren't so time sensitive.

The Globe's front page featured an article about Newton's trillion dollar school

It reminded me of the Dig feature a few weeks back:

To set things straight

By MELISSAJELTSEN on Wed, Feb 6, 2008 1:02 pm

Who could possibly make sense of the mass jumble that was super tuesday? I was still blearily checking the internet at 2 a.m. this morning, trying to understand the results.

So let me recap for you, what I think I have a grasp on.

Obama camp is saying that he actually won more delegates.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8358.html

Actually, after more research, I lied.

I do not have a grasp on this arcane and inane process at all.

ps -- wtf are super delegates?

If you want a big, goofy smile for change on your face, watch this:

Media and the Shrug

By MELISSAJELTSEN on Wed, Jan 30, 2008 1:22 pm

Yesterday, I was hanging out with my friend when the conversation invariably turned to politics (I admit, it was I that turned it that way.)

My friend said, oh, I don't want to pay attention to the election because it just makes me dislike all the candidates. I just saw a horrible thing on TV where Obama snubbed Hillary when she was trying to greet him.

Oh, I said. You havent watched any debates, you don't even know about South Carolina's primary and you were unaware of super Tuesday -- but--- you have seen the snub.

Thanks, broadcast media.

But then, this morning, I go to the NYT online, and what do I see?

Math and God

By MELISSAJELTSEN on Mon, Jan 28, 2008 8:57 pm

The New York Times reported that mathematicians believe in God at a rate 2 1/2 times that of biologists, quoting a survey of the National Academy of Sciences. Admittedly, that's not saying much: Only 14.6 per cent of mathematicians embraced the God hypothesis, versus 5.5 per cent of biologists.

Tales Pre-party

By pinklady on Wed, Jul 16, 2008 12:24 pm

Before dinner MiMi, Em, and I (Pink Lady) head down to the Carousel Bar for Vieux Carres and to meet up with Hanky Panky and Barbara West. The Carousel Bar spins in the center of the room, so to chat with these seated gals, we have to march slowly around the room with them. We're doing the "Carousel Crawl." It looks impossibly silly.

On our way...

Tuesday LUPEC hits the road for Tales!

6:45 a.m. ET: Ouch. We arrive at the airport. Mimi, Pink Lady, and longtime friend, Em are traveling together on Jet Blue. We’ve had a collective 8 hours of sleep between the 3 of us and are in desperate need of coffee.

Activists, lobbyists and legislators rally to cut emissions

By Scott Sayare on Thu, Jul 3, 2008 2:13 pm

A crowd of about a hundred ex-hippie environmentalists, optimistic lobbyists, state congressmen in ties and business suits, and concerned citizens from five to 75 crowded the State House steps yesterday in support of the Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA). Armed with posters, megaphones, and an acoustic guitar, they called for the House of Representatives to vote on and pass the far-reaching carbon emissions bill, which has already been approved by the state senate.
