AS220 Youth Photography Presentation and Artist Talk

By as220 on Tue, Dec 8, 2009 6:49 pm

Photographic Memory, AS220's youth photography and training program, proudly presents a culmination of their collective work in a 2010 calendar. Each month is accompanied by a black and white photo straight from the portfolio of a PhotoMem student. Much of the work presented in the calendar was recently featured in a show at Providence City Hall.

In the Photographic Memory program, under served youth gain technical training in photography and have the opportunity to hone their creative skills with guidance from supportive and talented peers and mentors. AS220's Broad Street Studio was founded in the winter of 2001 in South Providence and since 2005 now occupies most of the second floor of AS220's Empire Street building. Broad Street runs arts programming both inside the Rhode Island Training School (RI's juvenile detention facility) and in downtown Providence. The organization focuses on youth inside or transitioning out of the RITS or DCYF care, a traditionally overlooked population, but is free and open for any young person interested in the arts. The work produced by Broad Street and PhotoMem students is consistently compelling and covers a broad range of themes, each told from a unique perspective and in a way only they can tell it.

Former PhotoMem student and current AmeriCorps Vista Miguel Rosario, current member Anthony Villavicencio and Program Director and AS220 Darkroom Manager Scott Lapham will give a brief presentation this Saturday, Dec.12th at 1pm to discuss their work, their involvement with AS220 and Broad Street Studio and the 2010 PhotoMem Calendar. Their presentation will be followed by an artist talk with photographer Stewart Martin, a longtime AS220 supporter, teacher and master printer. Martin's show "Personal Favorites:1975-2000," is on display through Dec.27 at the AS220 gallery at 115 Empire Street. Martin, who has printed work for Bruce Davidson and other influential photographers, has also assembled a collection of work that spans three decades and depicts scenes from San Fransisco Halloween parades to nursing homes and roadside cafes in rural Vermont. This is the first formal, public lecture Martin has given about his own work since he began taking photos at three years old.

The 2010 Photographic Memory Calendars are on sale now for $15 each, and all proceeds from this project, conceived and designed by PhotoMem, Broad Street Studio Product Design Team and through the Paul Krot Community Darkroom at AS220, will help fund these programs and will support and maintain continued photo programs and training at AS220. Calendars will be available for sale during the artist talk, and can also be found locally at Cellar Stories, Craftland, Frog and Toad, the AS220 Bar and Cafe and online at www.as220.org.shop.

AS220's restaurant's Grand Opening "Hail Seitan" Celebration

By as220 on Thu, Nov 12, 2009 5:22 pm AS220's restaurant's Grand Opening "Hail Seitan" Celebration
Friday, November 13th 2009 6pm-Close

The restaurant at AS220
115 Empire St. Providence, RI 02903
Hours: Mon-Thurs 11-10, Fri-Sat 11-11
Phone: 401-831-FOOD (3663)

This Friday the 13th, skip the yearly retreat to Camp Crystal Lake and partake of the hedonistic festivities surrounding the return of food at AS220. Come celebrate with us on this ill-fated day a wholly auspicious happening.

We are thrilled to announce the return of food at AS220 beginning Friday, November 6th, and to invite you to our grand opening celebration, featuring a hearty $6.66 buffet, on Friday, November 13th.  Please come by, one and all, to welcome our new restaurant manager Guy Michaud and consume his creations until you are content. We will present a number of offerings for the occasion including, of course, house-made seitan specialties.  Our menu for this special event, as well as our offerings henceforth, is designed to be sensitive to all food allergies, dietary restrictions, and gastronomic phobias.  Herbivores may trust that they will be always be sated by the knowledgeable and benevolent forces behind the counter, while meat eaters can be assured that we will continue to sacrifice the living for their pleasure. Naturally, all varieties of libations will flow from the taps of the AS220 bar.

While $6.66 for a meal of Dionysian proportions is an unspeakable good, rest in peace that the regular menu is also exceedingly affordable, topping out well below ten dollars.  For this meager pile of coins you will be afforded the freshest food made lovingly from local produce and locally crafted artisanal elements, the incredible convenience of inexpensive down-city eats, and a new home in which Rhode Island's food culture may flourish.  As an added bonus, you might evade eternal hellfire and endless misfortune by inadvertently walking towards the light, as all the earnings from our food offerings directly support the not for profit organization's continued ability to offer unjuried, uncensored, all ages exhibitions and performances, stay true to our open booking policies, provide accessible arts education, and much more.  AS220's restaurant also includes, at any given time, three six month positions for youth involved in the Broad Street Studio, a program which affords free arts instruction and professional development to youth aged 14-21, focusing on those in or recently released from state care and/or youth graduating from the Rhode Island Training School's culinary arts program. Your support of the restaurant at AS220 allows us to offer these paid training positions to youth, helping them to gain their economic independence and valuable work experience that will increase their opportunities in the larger community. Nary a single coin handed over our counter will ever inflate a bloated salary or be thrown at the feet of idols. So confident are we in the purity of our mission, we haphazardly poke fun at evil.

Hungry headbangers, black-magicians, shameless sinners, and downtown professionals, we look forward to completing the circle with you this Friday the 13th.

Action Speaks Asks "What Now?"

By as220 on Wed, Sep 30, 2009 4:21 pm

With our country mired in its worst economic collapse since the great depression, history can be a guide for what actions our nation should or shouldn't take to provide for its citizens and whether or not it is time to re-set our priorities.

Join AS220 for a series of participatory panel discussions looking at four "underappreciated" dates that have changed American history.

October 7: 1993-The Creation of Hillary Clinton's taskforce on healthcare (What are the chances for survival for a nation divided on healthcare?)

October 14: 1932-The Highlander Center Opens Its Doors (What is the future of community organizing?)

October 21: 1972-Nixon visits the People's Republic of China (the US and China, partners or enablers?)

October 28: 1951-The rise of Levittown (What is the future of the suburbs?  Are they sustainable?)

AS220 Foo Fest 2009

By as220 on Wed, Jul 22, 2009 6:24 pm

We are pleased to announce the return of the most artsy summer art fair, AS220’s Foo Fest (also known as the Fool's Ball and the 20 Fest in previous years). We're bringing back the urban street party, turning most of Empire Street into an open-air exhibition and performance space. Numerous interactive art installations, games and twelve hours of all-original music from twenty-two diverse bands are among this year’s offerings (including our headlining act SUN RA ARKESTRA). Drinks and refreshments from our in-house bar and local restaurants will be available all day at affordable prices. We think you will agree that moving the traditional summer festival away from commerce and towards creativity is a welcome and refreshing change.

While AS220 is and always has been all ages, this year we have made sure to include kid-focused programming at Foo Fest from 1pm to 6pm as well as a few kid-friendly events later in the evening. So bring everyone down - we hope to see you there!

Web site: http://www.as220.org/photolottery/

This May 30th, please join us for the third biennial Photo Lottery! Every two years, we gather together over a hundred pieces of photo-based artwork from students, amateurs, youth, working professionals, photo journalists and legendary photographers. This culminates in a celebration bringing together artists, collectors and the public for a mind-boggling salon style art show that pays tribute to the diversity of work being done in the photographic medium. Each $100 ticket is guaranteed to win a piece from this amazing array and to sweeten the pot, you have the privilege of taking the work home with you that very same evening. The Photo Lottery generates significant resources for the Paul Krot Darkroom & photo program of AS220, helping us continue to bring you inexpensive equipment rentals and low and no cost education, free events to grow the artistic community, and helps to sustain the only public darkroom facilities in Rhode Island.

You can think about buying a ticket to win an artwork as an investment or a donation, but either way, your $100 will be well spent. This year we've made it even easier to buy tickets, purchase them at the AS220 bar, by contacting us directly, or online. Go ahead and buy your tickets from your armchair or office via Brown Paper Tickets- http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/63945 . In the spirit of community, and since this exhibit is on view for only one evening, we encourage everyone to attend the Photo Lottery celebration free of charge regardless of if you purchase a ticket.

This year we are thrilled to announce donations from Jock Sturges, Henry Horenstein, Denny Moers and Mona Kuhn are among the work of a number of other prestigious & simply talented artists.

Everyone who buys a ticket wins a piece of art! How Democratic!

AS220 Artist and Curator Guest Lecturers

By as220 on Wed, Sep 17, 2008 3:57 pm Guest Lectures with Gretchen Wagner, Curatorial Assistant from the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Prints and Printmaker Andrew Raftery

as220 Gallery/Performance Space
115 Empire Street
Providence, RI 02903

September 20th, 2008 6:30 pm

The AS220 Community Printshop is extremely pleased to announce that professor, scholar and printmaker Andrew Raftery will be joining us, along with Gretchen Wagner, Curatorial Assistant from the Department of Prints and Illustrated books from the Museum of Modern Art, on Saturday, the 20th of September, for two very special guest lectures. Andrew Raftery (MFA, Yale University School of Art), a printmaker specializing in narrative engravings of contemporary American life, is an associate professor in the department of printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design. Raftery recently received a 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship, and will use the fellowship period to complete an engraving project he’s been working on for several years. The works will be exhibited in a solo show at New York City’s Mary Ryan Gallery in October. His work is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Fogg Art Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery and the New York Public Library.

Gretchen L. Wagner (MA, Williams College) is a curatorial assistant in the department of prints and illustrated books at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Wagner has curated exhibitions at the D.U.M.B.O. Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY, the Tang Museum at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, and the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, among other institutions, in addition to acting on the programming and curatorial committees for WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution and Greater New York 2005 at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in Long Island City, NY. Following contemporary developments in printmaking The Museum of Modern Art has recently acquired several projects by artists such as Gabriel Orozco, Nicola López, Nicolas Lampert, and Swoon, among others. This presentation will introduce some recent acquisitions of Moma's collection, speak to challenges involved in the display of these artworks, and pursue an investigation of recent trends in printmaking and its impact on art produced in all mediums.
These lectures are an exciting part of print month at as220, celebrating the one year anniversary of Rhode Island's only public community printshop.  September's events will culminate in a fundraising Print Lottery featuring 200 prints and works on paper, now on exhibition in the performance space at 115 Empire St.
