Bitter? Liqueur? I don't even know her!

Summertime and the drinking is easy

The temperature is rising, and we smell barbeque! Summer's long weekends are an opportune time to focus on spirits that are lower in alcohol—the perfect option for social occasions that span an entire day. Here's a primer on some of our favorites.

Campari is a bitter Italian aperitivo. The full recipe is a closely-guarded secret, but we do know that Campari is flavored with rhubarb, quinine, bergamot and orange peel ... among other things. When the temperature rises, pour it over ice and top with soda. If you find this too bitter, cut the Campari 50 percent with sweet vermouth and enjoy an Americano; or, try Campari's less bitter cousin, Aperol.

Widely known for its role in James Bond's Vesper cocktail, Lillet Blanc is a refreshing French aperitif from Podensac, near Bordeaux. A blend of Bordeaux wines, fruit liqueur and quinine—and only 17-percent alcohol by volume—Lillet is perfect for an afternoon of drinking on the porch. Serve Lillet on the rocks with a twist of orange.

The French artisanal liqueur St. Germain offers a lovely floral option. Handcrafted using elderflowers and eau-de-vie, St. Germain offers complex flavor without delivering a boozy punch. At 20-perfect alcohol by volume, we've lazed away many an afternoon sipping St Germain and soda. Looking for something a bit more thrilling? Split the soda water with champagne or white wine for a St Germain Cocktail.

Now let's mix up one of our favorites! Cin-cin!

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
