Baring—and blaring—Mother Nature's bounty

By LUCY BARBER

The 15th Annual Radio 92.9 Earthfest this Saturday will not only be avidly eco-friendly, but you can have your Cake and eat it too. Along with environmentally oriented activities, the festival boasts musical guests as good as greenhouse gases are bad. They're going the distance with, you guessed it, Cake, along with British ska kings The English Beat. Joining them on the Main Stage will be the likes of roots-rockers The BoDeans and '90s alt-fave Cracker (has your past been blasted yet?).

The event will also feature a Boston Music Stage, a platform for talented local acts The Help, Tim Blane, The Brew, Cahill and The Adam Ezra Group. Family fare will be in ample supply, including the Kid's Planet Stage, an entertainment area for the young and those of us completely engrossed by the creepy-cute existence of a munchkin brother-and-sister "rock duo." There's a ton of sponsors, so make sure your enviro-tote can handle all the green swag.

Earthfest has drawn over 100,000 Bostonians in the past, so it's better to get there early and stake a grassy spot. If you're riding the T, Charles/MGH on the Red Line or Arlington on the Green Line is your best bet.

Break your sandals out of hibernation and get ready for the chorus of "Closer to Free" to burn an infinite loop into your brain. At least that's one thing we don't have to worry about sustaining. Everything else in the natural world? Yes.

[Sat. 5.24. DCR Hatch Shell, Esplanade, Boston. 12pm-6pm/free. earthfest.com]

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
