A roots touch-up

Gearing up for Bikes Not Bombs' annual fest

By CHRISTINE LIU

You would think that any alternative to bombs could surely be a brilliant move. (World peace through ice cream? Maybe.) However, we have much more faith in Bikes Not Bombs, a local nonprofit onto something truly tantamount in their efforts to empower communities with recycled bicycles. They ship thousands to economic development projects worldwide and cultivate a vocational training program via their JP bike shop. Their commitment to social justice flourishes in Boston and beyond, and this weekend kicks off their commemorative events. Hit the Green Roots Festival for treats from live music to eco-education, and Bill McKibben (environmentalist author of such titles as The End of Nature and Deep Economy) headlines the keynote speeches.

If the feeling of riding en masse doesn't faze you—or perhaps you just want to break in that kicky little chamois—the concurrent Bike-A-Thon invites sponsored bikers to race, raising helpful funds for the benefit of Bikes Not Bombs' grassroots endeavors. There are three options—15-, 25- or 62-mile routes—to accommodate any and all cyclists. Apparently participants have ranged from age two to 75, so chin up and no excuses! It's a pretty cushy deal, replete with the whole works (sustenance, mechanics, maps, road markings, following vehicles), and plenty of warm fuzzies and gourmet food waiting for you at the end.

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
