Organic vodka company plugs along a sustainable path

By BEN WHELAN

In today's climate of "greenwashing" and widespread conservation efforts, even luxury goods—like spirits—are seeing an infusion of eco-consciousness. TRU Organic Vodka, a California-based brand, not only guarantees that every step of production is USDA-certified organic (from the wind-powered Idaho wheat farm to local lemons for infusions), but also takes tremendous steps to be more sustainable in every element of their business.

Their bottles use less glass (about 200 grams less than the industry standard) and tree-free or recycled-paper labels printed with soy or vegetable inks. For every bottle sold, the company will plant a tree in the rainforest.

Green agenda aside, TRU tastes superior to many of its counterparts in the vodka world. While many infused vodkas on the market use flavor extracts, TRU goes straight to the source, using real vanilla beans and hand-grated lemon zest.

Sustainable eats—always a good idea. Sustainable drinks? We're down.

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
