Brookline Village | Green Line

A safe bet for ensaladas, espressos and spiritual esteem

In light of recent MBTA catastrophes, people are all astir about the D line. Well, we're politely asking you to get over it, because there's a whole lotta goodness to be had.

Denizens rejoiced at the April opening of Latin-flavored Orinoco [22 Harvard St., Brookline. 617.232.9505. orinocokitchen.com]. The gorgeous gastronomical delights dished out by their first South End location has left yelpers blathering poetic for years, so you can imagine the eager response when Ariel P sounded the horn, rhapsodizing about theBrookline kitchen's warm space, great service and lipsmackingly good "mojo" sauce. (Are we at liberty to insert a juvenile "that's what he/she said" here?)

When keepin' it casual, Kookoo Café [7 Station St., Brookline. 617.730.5525. kookoocafe.com] is just the right blend of quirky, tasty and comfortable. Annette A limns, "The interior reminds me of someone's bedroom with wooden floors, tables and little trinkets and things hidden in the cabinets." And speaking of hidden and comfy, Sara H spurs us to visit Pod [313 Washington St., Brookline. 617.739.3802. shop-pod.com], a bijoux boutique with a panoply of covetable home and personal accessories.

No neighborhood is complete without a path to nirvana, and Horai-San [242 Washington St., Brookline. 617.277.4321. horai-san.com] packages spirituality in spades. Irinia N dropped by to locate a special crystal of sorts and discovered a wealth of new-age books, accoutrements and Tibetan jewelry, while Jen Y found peace of mind listening to the "calm sounds of water dripping and relaxing meditating music."

When a decompression session calls for melodies that will really move you, Matt Murphy's [14 Harvard St., Brookline. 617.232.0188. mattmurphyspub.com] offers doses of live jazz and a killer brunch that Tim T tells us eases the hangovers of locals. With $5 brewskies and no cover, just nod.

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
