City escapism—it's a shore thing

By LIGAYA TICHY

Marvelous little-known fact: The MBTA runs a speedy water shuttle service from Long Wharf to Quincy via Logan. The $6 ferry ride is quite exhilarating on its own, but half an hour later you'll feel a gentle calm only achieved by leaving the city. About time to experience an exciting mini-vacation in Quinzeee, no?

From the harborside patio at The Inn at Bay Pointe [64 Washington Court, Quincy. 617.472.3200. innatbaypointe.com], a worthy stop on your nautical adventure, David M cheerfully reports that the only passersby are yachts, boats and catamarans. What better way to celebrate summer than chowder in the sunshine!

When relaxing involves watching the game, scamper over to Coop's [520 Washington St., Quincy. 866.328.3378. coopsbarandgrille.com] for 42-inch plasmas and five-star American eatin'. Susan N regales us with praise of hand-cut sweet potato fries, steak tips and buffalo Bourbon meatballs—the makings of munchies right here, folks.

Indulge in a childhood throwback at Frozen Freddies [435 Washington St., Quincy. 617.328.7772], where lickings are creamy and the sprinkles always homemade. Quincy denizen Kristin N lovingly swallows the yellow not-found-in-nature birthday cake batter flavor and declares it "the most delicious ice cream ever!"

On your way back to the boats, check out My House [609 Washington St., Quincy. 617.302.4285. myspace.com/myhousequincy]. Though Andrew W docks 'em points for their contrived "coolness" (and considering their MySpace page boasts a Weezer cover band, it's not entirely unfounded), they've been holding down the South Shore waterfront nightlife with live music and roof-raising DJs. Just be careful with those wicked mojitos, because the last boat home leaves at 10:30pm. All aboard!

Health and Human Services Public Hearing

“One of the most heart breaking things for me is the great number of homeless veterans,” said Ralph Cooper, executive director of Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse. “As you can tell, I’m getting older and my gray hair tells the truth. You can’t imagine how painful it is for me to talk with men and women who served in Vietnam, men and women who are young, coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq and they are homeless. How disgraceful is that?”
