Oh Cruel World!

By Dig Readers

Dear Goebbels,

At first, I wasn't sure what you were doing as I rode my bike by your front porch. Maybe you were just waving your cigarette around erratically—this is Cambridge, after all. Then I saw the dog eagerly following your every gesture. It wasn't until you had tossed the butt, however, that I figured out exactly what was going on: You were playing fetch with a lit cigarette. Of course the puppy ran after the glowing red stick and yelped when it burned its tongue.

Traffic prevented me from turning around or even yelling, "Asshole!" But now that I think about it, calling you an asshole is an insult to all the ordinary inconsiderate assholes that usually grace this section. Calling you an asshole is like calling Father Geoghan a jerk or Hitler a douche.

Someone remind me again: Why is cruel and unusual punishment banned in this country?

Rooooll call!Rooooll call! So, the roll call vote feels more like a game show than a democratic process. It basically goes like this:

Secretary Alice Germond (the host in our little metaphor), says the name of the state, and the giant screen behind her sports the state's name, and how many votes it's been afforded.

"State," says Germond.

Night Two of Pageantry

On Monday night, your trusty Dig reporter was relegated to the press gallery, and spent an hour and a half trying to find the damn booth for rotating floor credentials, being sent up and down the stairs, getting a different answer from every DNCC staffer. It made my thighs slightly stronger and the ball of rage in my stomach significantly heavier. It made me wonder how the Dems would run a country, when they can't credential a reporter. But last night I found the magic booth and got onto the floor, so all is forgiven.
